Lessons from Nature

We perceive nature as a vast phenomenon, every element makes an amazing whole, even the smallest molecules contribute to creating spectacular effects.

With the universe at its peak, we see how all that makes up our world has something we can get inspired by as we go about our daily lives.

The Sun, the moon, the Stars, the Oceans, the Wind, our Earth… You name it. Nature graces us with diverse attributes that we cannot help but acknowledge.

This is why I decided to put together a short compilation of poems revealing the lessons I have personally observed from nature.

The Earth

I like to think that living on Earth is like living underwater. The idea that the firmament above is a body of water and the periodic rainfalls convince me.

She births life and everything it holds. We, her children roam the world on a quest. Some of us fully aware of why we came and others, yet to figure this out.

A vast land that presents many choices. To live, to die, to explore, or to hide. Whatever our choices are, we are all connected by the land upon which we tread.

Faced with the vagaries of events beyond our control we learn to brace ourselves, pressing forward with the view that something better than the present awaits us.

In the end, though, Mother Earth calls for every one of us, we must return to her embrace but not without leaving something behind.

She remembers, oh she does! We may call it history but her recollection of those who once trod her land is beyond facts and figures.

None of her children is completely forgotten. Like the hurricane which leaves memories, we who tread upon the Earth shall give her inhabitants something to remember — Hope, Love, Despair, Hate, Gain, Loss…

In whatever we do. Let us remember that posterity will eat the fruits of our existence.

The Sun

She’s got a voice of her own, the queen of the galaxy I would say.

You know when she is up and when she is not, although she never moves. Even in her “absence”, we get a glimpse of her existence.

Playing by her rules the Sun is a fierce commander, ruling the sky right from the break of dawn. We love her light yet hide from the intensity of her rays, for the careless beholder may get a sting.

On mountain tops and upon lowlands the sun remains a guide.

How hope rises at the break of dawn, welcoming the sun’s embrace. Sometimes, we greet her morning with distress, nonetheless, we are thankful she appeared.

She reveals to us that certain things are necessary for the continuity of life and though we may try to conceal agendas, all must come to light because nothing stays hidden forever.

The Moon

Floating bountifully in the night sky, she knows when it’s time to show up. Like that friend who is always there when you need her, the beacon of hope guiding you through dark times. I bet the moon has heard many silent cries and seen happy moments too.

Her light is fierce yet welcoming, perfectly displaying the sun’s reflection — she does not turn away the amazed observer.

The moon is a gallant muse, guiding tired eyes to sleep, she wouldn’t mind sneaking into corners to light your path.

She is a reminder that although the journey is long, there is a moment for rest.

At the end of the day, we count our losses and wins. We lay down in anticipation of our next move. We sit, we pray, we wait… We hope.

The Wind

A silent whisper could turn into a hurricane in no time.
We do not see her coming although sometimes we perceive her inclinations.

Waking up to still mornings or struggling to get through windy nights;
What happens and when it happens is unpredictable.

Was it really a sudden movement, or did we fail to notice when the tempo started increasing? The wind sings and like it or not we dance to her tune.

She commands attention, her voice is not one to ignore.

Could it be? Could it be nature’s way of unsettling the balance we think we somehow created in our vain attempts to rearrange the order of things already decided, or could it be nature reminding us that she is alive too?

From whence she rises or where she settles no man can tell, but one thing is sure. She will have no one live as though she does not exist.

She is lovely when she is a cool breeze relieving your mind and soul of life’s burdens. Dreadful when she’s a hurricane wreaking destruction to your world as you know it. Oceans, Desserts, Plateaus, Forests, her boundaries are nonexistent.

The wind is a reminder, that as small as we may appear, all we need might just be a little more pressure and high walls would become crumbs of helpless defenses.

The Ocean

Constantly at par with the rhythm of the wind. The ocean is either a friend or foe. Her beautiful blue is worthy to behold from a distance, her tide is an inconsistent demeanor. A closer look would have you decide whether to trust her lure or flee from her wrath.

The Ocean is peaceful as a friend, ready for an adventure when it comes to it. She’ll let you plunge into her depths, though you decide if your strength matches her capacity.

Sailing her waters without a compass will have you lost in no time, washed up on a shore wishing you never went.

As a foe, she is capable of devouring, she’ll rain heavily upon your vessel when she unites with the strength of the wind.

She teaches us the uncertainties of life. When events arise beyond our control, are we anchored in the convictions of our fortitude, or do we give in without a fight?
